Optical Coherence Tomography

Recommended for people aged 25 or over, who want to know more about their eye health.

OCT OxfordshireOur new OCT uses cutting-edge technology to look more closely at your retina, which then allows us to take 3D scans of the retinal surface, presenting us with the unique opportunity to spot the signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy in their very earliest stages.

An OCT scan is recommended even when your eyes are healthy in order to provide a baseline image. By comparing multiple OCT scans over the years, we can notice subtle changes in the thickness of the layers of the retina. This can indicate early signs of eye conditions, making it much easier to diagnose, treat and manage.

OCT scans are recommended for people aged 25 or over, who want to know more about their eye health, or those who have diabetes, glaucoma, or have family history of eye diseases.

How does an OCT scan work?

OCT is similar to an ultrasound, using light waves instead of sound waves. It can effectively view and capture images of the retina with detail and accuracy. OCT is an effective assessment tool for several reasons:

  • It’s non-invasive
  • It’s painless
  • It has minimal health risks
  • It has no radiation

The scan is done on both eyes, one at a time. It is completely painless; you may be slightly dazzled by the flash of light that is given off in the machine, as if you have had your picture taken, but this will quickly disappear.
